Brummell did his undergraduate studies at Imperial College at the University of London (UK) in Mathematics and received his B.Sc. there with first class honours. He was accepted to do a Ph.D. in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the same university, under the supervision of Dr.~D.R.~Moore. Ethan L. Miller is a Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he holds the Veritas Presidential Chair in Storage.
