I recieved my bachelors degree from The University of Texas at Austin and a PhD from The University of California Santa Cruz.    I was a European Southern Observatory Fellow working in Chile.    I served as a resident astronomer at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory with responsibilties covering all of science operations.     I am now the Deputy Director for University of California Observatories.

I am an expert in medium and high resolution optical and IR spectroscopy.  This includes the quantum mechanical information for spectrscopic features including atomic and molecular species.

I have an interest in galactic chemical evolution as expressed through stellar spectroscopy.   I also am interested in stellar evolution, in particular how stars change their surface chemistry as they become red giants.
