Hello, I am Justin Diaz, a PhD student in the chemistry and biochemistry department. I work under the supervision of Michael Stone and utilize single-molecule techniques to understand protein dynamics. I first started my academic journey at De Anza Community College and transferred to San Jose State University to pursue my undergraduate degree in biochemistry. During my undergraduate years, I worked with Dr. Nicholas Esker in a nuclear chemistry lab that seeks to understand the elemental properties of the universe using particle accelerators. Most of my time was dedicated to chemical synthesis and solvent casting of deuterated polyethylene. The purpose of this was to bombard deuterated polyethylene targets and observe deuterium molecules. Now, I pivoted back to biochemistry and will complete my PhD in Biochemistry.
In our lab, we focus on understanding telomeres' RNA components and protein dynamics. We use single-molecule FRET to understand the real-time dynamics of catalytic RNA and telomeric proteins. This knowledge will advance our fundamental understanding of telomere biology and provide crucial insights into telomere-related diseases and potential therapeutic interventions.
