Jessie Beck is a PhD student in the Conservation Action Lab in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department, and is co-advised by Drs. Don Croll and Myra Finkelstein. Jessie is also a seabird ecologist and research fisheries science at NOAA's Alaska Fisheries Science Center.
Jessie's work focuses on fisheries bycatch and threats to seabird populations. Her projects focus on understanding of the extent and impact of seabird bycatch in Alaska fisheries; using seabird bycatch and genetic methods to inform our understanding of ecology and conservation; and incorporating seabird data into fisheries management. She also co-leads the collaborative NOAA-Oikonos Seabird Bycatch Necropsy Program. This program won the 2023 Presidential Migratory Bird Federal Stewardship Award. Jessie received her Masters from the University of California Santa Cruz, and previously studied seabird ecology and fisheries bycatch issues across the North Pacific, California, Hawaiʻi, and Chile.
