I am a professor in the Computer Science and Engineering department at UCSC. I have been at UCSC since 2001.

Prior to that, I was an undergraduate student in Torino, Italy, then a Ph.D. student at Stanford, and then a postdoc at UC Berkeley. For three years, while on leave from UCSC, I was at Google, first as a visiting faculty, then eventually as a Staff Research Scientist. I co-founded two companies; SSB Progetti in Italy, and Camio in the US.

My main area of work is computational ecology: I use computational methods and techniques derived from AI/ML to study interaction, be it among humans, animals, or nodes in a network.  In particular, I am working on three projects: modeling animal habitats for conservation purposes; using ML and reinforcement learning for networks, and data science for fairness in AI.  You can read more on my home page.

I usually teach undergraduate introductory classes (I created CSE 30: Abstractions in Python), senior-level classes (I developed and I currently teaching CSE 183: Web Applications), and a variety of graduate classes; I am currently working on a new class on computational ecology.
