I have been the Design and Outreach Engineer for the past five years for UCSC Xena, a tool that gives biologists an integrated, secure and user-friendly way to access genomics. I have also done User Experience Design for BRCA Exchange, a tool that aims to advance our understanding of the genetic basis of breast, ovarian, pancreatic and other cancers by pooling data on BRCA1/2 genetic variants and corresponding clinical data from around the world, and also for UShER, a tool to quickly place SARS-CoV-2 sequences in a global phylogenetic tree. I was also a Quality Assurance Engineer for the UCSC Cancer Browser and the UCSC Genome Browser.

In my User Experience Design role I work extensively with biologists, clinical researchers, and engineers to understand what is needed in a web application to effectively and interactively explore and present data in a comprehensible manner. My expertise in user interfaces has allowed me to significantly improve the design of our web applications to better suit biologists’ needs. I excel at gathering user needs through various methodologies and then transform abstract user feedback into concrete designs and new workflows. As part of my Outreach role, I give workshops, talks and posters at scientific conferences. I document how to use tools and leverage video tutorials, scientific papers, newsletters, and Twitter to help reach users.
